8/29/08 Weekend Movie Openings

movies — Gary R. Hess @ 10:50 pm on Aug 23, 2008

I don’t know about anyone else, but I was completely shocked about the lack of crowds headed to see The Rocker last Wednesday. What production company opens a movie on Wednesday without knowing full well that the film will be popular? Well, it looks like FOX does.

Anyway, this week holds a brand new feel. Two comedies are opening and another is expanding (Hamlet 2) with a sci-fi thriller and a drama thriller set to release.

Babylon A.D. (Action Thriller)

Trailer:

A mercenary escorts a woman from Russia to China who is a host to an organism wanted by a cult. Starring Vin Diesel and Michelle Yeoh. Honestly, it looks like another Riddick movie. It’ll get the crowds, but will be far from winning any awards.

College (Comedy)

Trailer:

Three high school seniors visit a college campus in hopes of a crazy weekend. This movie is about college, targets high schoolers, but is also rated R. Yeah, I see that going over well. It might do OK if enough high school seniors bring their buddies to the show, but I don’t see too many college students wanting to see this.

Disaster Movie (Comedy)

Trailer:

Just another movie that makes fun of other movies. It is by the Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie, Date Movie, and Scary Movie authors and directors. So once again it will get high schoolers but not much else. The writers should really go back to their roots. Scary Movie was actually good.

Traitor (Drama Thriller)

Trailer:

A special op is working with a terrorist group and becomes the target of the CIA. The film stars Don Cheadle, Jeff Daniels, and Guy Pearce. The trailer looks absolutely amazing. Cheadle is a great actor and the fact that a Dumb and Dumber star (Daniels) can come into this film and do a great job is an excellent show of talent. This is definitely my pick of the week in terms of wanting to actually watch it.

What will win this weeks big money? My bet is on Babylon A.D. opening in 3,200 theaters. But my film to watch is by far and away Traitor.
