A Tom Cruise film based off true events during WWII. The problem is Tom Cruise. I really don’t get the point of a film that would be better served as a documentary. Also, I don’t get the point of putting the film in German. American actors dressed in Nazi clothing is still an American. It just seems way too unrealistic.

Anyway, this week’s movies don’t seem much better. We have a big budget remake of a film which didn’t need to be remade, a comedy which is suppose to be a comedy, and a movie full of yesterday’s stars. *sigh*

The Day the Earth Stood Still Sci-fi

A “remake” of a classic. The problem is, it isn’t really a remake. In this film, Keanu brings destruction. In the original the only bad thing that happens (besides a few people dying due to the robot) is the cities lights go out for a period of time.

Will I still watch it? Yes. But only to see exactly how much is different.

Delgo Animation

Honestly, I haven’t heard much about this film. However, it has a nice cast of voice actors including Freddy Prinze JR., Chris Kattan (former SNL actor), Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Batman Val Kilmer.

Nothing Like the Holidays Comedy

Do you know what this movie is about? Well, me neither. Alright… so I get the jist of it. A family might be spending their last Christmas together so they want to make the most of it. I’m not expecting much, but it has been getting press for quite a while (mostly under its previous name “Humboldt Park”.)

If you haven’t seen the film, it is basically about a man, Frank Martin, who delivers ‘packages’ without caring about why or whom the person/thing is. He absolutely loves cars and is a great fighter. Actually, he is unrealistically good at both (which explains why some people absolutely love the film while others hate it).

So Mr. Martin gets this girl, Shu Qi, and is supposed to deliver her. The problem is, he gets too involved. He starts talking to her and getting to know her. She cooks for him (oooh ahhh) and they basically become friends. This of course is all happening while he is kicking serious butt.

In one scene, Martin stops the car and lets Shu Qi take a leak in the nearby woods. She is tied up, so Martin unties her hands and legs so she can walk and do her business. As a way to make sure she doesn’t run away, he ties a noose around her neck. See the flaws? She just lifts the noose off her neck since her hands are free and puts it on a bush then attempts to run away. Martin finds her quickly, but so do other men who wish to take her from him. This is when he shows some of his badassery. He beats up four men single handedly much like in Jackie Chan films but in a less realistic way.

Later, he ends up getting in another fight (there are many fight scenes), and is completely kicking butt. But, he can do more. Once his shirt is ripped off he really begins to kick some ass. I wish this would happen to me. Say I’m at a bar getting hammered and some guys come along and start hitting on my girlfriend. I then try to ‘protect’ her and start fighting. I then punch each one and am holding them off fine. Then, all of the sudden I take my shirt off and become an invincible kicking ass machine. That would be awesome.

Although the film is very unrealistic at least it is so much so that anyone can tell it is Hollywood magic and can’t be confused with possible real-life scenarios. I absolutely hate it when films try to cover up what would really happen by adding every-so-slight exaggerations (if that makes sense). You know, like when a car gets shot and it explodes. This is why (at least I assume why) people love the Kill Bill movies (which I absolutely loath).

Rating: 3 1/2 stars (out of 5 possible)

This week includes several movies which were moved up. Just a couple weeks ago only Punisher was going to be released on the December 5th weekend, now there are three major openings (although Punisher is still the largest by far).

I haven’t heard much about Cadillac Records (probably because it is being advertised to a specific group I’m not in). Nobel Son looks like it will be fun, but probably a TV movie for me. Punisher? Meh… I hated the first movie. I loved the comics as a child, but the movie just crapped out. I definitely want to see Frost/Nixon, but will my girlfriend? Probably not in theaters.

Cadillac Records (Musical Drama)
The movie follows the lives of recording artists in the 1950s with the likes of Chuck Berry, Etta James, and Leonard Chess.

Nobel Son (Crime Thriller)
Eli Michaelson (Alan Rickman) wins the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. His son is kidnapped and put for ransom at $2,000,000. Of course, the father/son relationship is hardly what you would call good. Eli refuses to pay the ransom which sets off a chain of events.

Punisher: War Zone (Action)
It’s the same ol’ same ol’ for Punisher. He kills a group of mobsters, the police is after him, and a new mob boss under the alias ‘Jigsaw’ comes about. Oh, forgot to mention that Punisher thinks about leaving the ‘justice’ department, but of course he doesn’t.

Frost/Nixon (Historical Drama)
The Ron Howard (Opie!) film about the Frost/Nixon interviews which took place three years after he was forced from office. Although this might sound boring to the unknowing, it is actually quite fascinating. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that Opie is the director.

Australia (Adventure)

A story about a woman in Australia during the Japanese bombings of WWII. It seems to be an interesting tale and definitely worth a watch.

Four Christmases (Comedy)

A man and woman attempt to travel instead of visiting their parents, but after flights are canceled and are interviewed on television, they must visit each of their parents (whom are separated).

Transporter 3 (Action)

The daughter of a Ukranian government official is kidnapped and Frank Martin is called once again to put his driving gloves on and save the day.

This week, two movies for the younger generation are coming to theaters in wide distribution. Most likely Quantum of Solace will remain the film to see.

- A dog who thinks he has super powers roams the street seeking help to find his way home. Hannah Montana Destiny Hope Cyrus Miley Cyrus and Scientology poster boy John Travolta star in this children’s film.

- Some teeny-bopper movie about vampires which are like no other. A girl falls in love with a vampire and he tries not to eat her. How that works out, well, no clue. Vampires get their ‘romance’ from sucking blood, not through sticking their carrots in young women. Oh well, it will make its money because people are funny.
