History of Father’s Day:
The idea of Father’s Day was first proposed by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington, in 1909 as a way to honor her father, William Smart. He was a civil war veteren who was a widow after his wife died during childbirth of their sixth child. Mrs. Dodd wanted to celebrate the strength and selflessness her father had shown to raise the children as a single parent.
The first Father’s Day in the USA was observed on June 19, 1910–June was the birth month of William Smart. Calvin Cooledge supported the idea of creating a national holiday, but the first presidential proclimation wasn’t until 1966 when Lyndon Johnson made the third Sunday of June as the official Father’s Day. The day has been celebrated yearly since 1972 when Richard Nixon signed it into public law making it permanent.
