Poetic Images: With this Pen

poetry — Gary R. Hess @ 8:38 am on Sep 30, 2008

With this pen I thee write
with notes and words which are never right
this paper lasts a hundred years
my heart pumps a thousand tears
when dusk has come and I am gone
I wish for you another dawn

The highest stretches of the Earth
can be reached by foot
with sweat and tears
our fears and dreams
can be conquered and enjoyed

Movie Poems: Planet of the Apes

movies — Gary R. Hess @ 8:56 am on Aug 18, 2008

Planet of the Apes is seen as one of the greatest films of all time. The original film stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, and Maurice Evans. The film was ground-breaking for its make-up techniques by artist John Chambers. The film turned into a series, including four sequals and a short lived television show, [...]

Javascript Poetry: Love Fades Away

poetry — Gary R. Hess @ 8:13 am on Aug 14, 2008

I’ve been fascinated with the concept of code poetry ever since I saw a blog dedicated to writing poetry using python. In short, code poetry is poetry with visual movement or delayed writing by using code. This makes for a more complex art form by bridging the gap between text and performance art, much like [...]

Poetic Images: Beauty

poetry — Gary R. Hess @ 8:05 am on Jul 31, 2008

Beauty is not but skin deep,
what you have is what you keep.
Cosmetics and surgery
change the dermis,
not inner grace.
We are born who we are
and beauty is within.
It may not be the best poem, especially in comparison to such a great image, but the meaning is still the same: what is underneath the skin [...]

Salute to StumbleUpon - Poem

poetry — Gary R. Hess @ 11:41 pm on Jul 20, 2008

I’ve been an avid user of StumbleUpon for about 2 1/2 years now. Their toolbar is the very first I install on any new computer and the only one I recommend–Yahoo? Google? Bleh, they have nothing on SU. StumbleUpon is a great time killer and way of finding new content.
Anyway, here is my salute to [...]

My favorite baseball team and sports team all around is the Kansas City Royals. They have been through many tough years of late, with only one winning season since 1994. I was too young when the Royals won the World Series in 1985, so most of my memories are full of losing. But, I still [...]

Horrid House - Poem Renewed

poetry — Gary R. Hess @ 4:17 am on Jul 14, 2008

One of my favorite poems I have written is Horrid House. I wrote it somewhere around seven years ago, so I decided to revamp the writing and add a bit more to the story. Also, this will be my first podcast, so if you feel up to listening, enjoy!

Independence Day - Poem

poetry — Gary R. Hess @ 9:47 pm on Jul 2, 2008

poem for 4th of July
on this independence day,
we remember the years past.
we honor this very day
for our flag, old glory, has last.
on this independence day,
two centuries ago, we
declared our independence
for justice and liberty.
on this independence day,
a war began with writing;
John Hancock signed the paper,
and war began with fighting.
on this independence day,
seven years from the former,
the [...]

Our Politics - Poem

poetry — Gary R. Hess @ 2:04 am on

poem on US politics
when two canidates sound the same–
everything, but the name–
our politics need to change
when there are two main parties
and neither care about the parities,
our politics need to change
when one man rises above the ranks
only because he doesn’t want tanks,
our politics need to change
when one man is famous for his torture,
but doesn’t mind being [...]
